Tony Marino: 24 Inspiring Albums and a Life of Music

Tony Marino Original Music – 24 Albums of Jazz, Latin, Rock & Funk Innovation (1997–2026)

Tony Marino, often hailed as “the quintessential Latin jazz keyboardist,” has now released 24 albums of original music—and he’s only getting stronger. Over the past four decades, Marino has proven himself as a composer, producer, and performer whose creativity bridges genres from Latin jazz to tango, big band, world music, blues, and most recently, instrumental rock.

Growing up in South Philadelphia, a 7-year-old Tony heard Leon Russell and decided he wanted to take piano lessons. Unlike most children, Tony never stopped. By his early teens, he was studying under pianist Bill DelGovenatore, who introduced him to Thelonious Monk and other jazz legends.

He worked at a local music store, where he connected with jazz musicians Frank DiBussolo and Al Stauffer. Eventually, DelGovenatore introduced him to pianist Tom Lawton, who became Tony’s final Philadelphia teacher before Tony met Ernest “Hoppy” Hopkins. These early mentors fueled a passion that would shape Marino’s entire career.

Early Career and First Bands

In 1975, as a high school freshman, Marino joined the Philadelphia Italian-American band Idea ’71. During his time with the group (1975–1982), they recorded the album Supersano at Virtue Recording Studios and a single on Medley Records. In 1995, he relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he formed Tony Marino and Havana Heat. Their success in local venues led to Marino’s debut original release in 1997: Tony Marino & Havana Heat: The Latin Jazz Project. This milestone launched his prolific recording career.

Expanding His Sound

Marino’s early 2000s albums established him as a leading force in Latin jazz, while his published songbook The Latin Jazz Project (2002) spread his compositions to musicians worldwide. He performed across the East Coast, Midwest, and California, collaborating with renowned players and expanding his stylistic palette to include Brazilian jazz, Afro-Cuban, bebop, swing, and tango.

Global Recognition

From 2016 onward, Marino released a prolific series of works that highlighted his originality and versatility, beginning with 101 (2016) and A Sound Inve$tment (2017). His momentum grew with Thank You for the Music (2018), followed by Tango Silhouette (2019), which earned a Global Music Award Silver Medal for Outstanding Achievement in both album and composition/composer.

In 2020, he released Family and Friends, featuring ‘Gary,’ which won a Global Music Award Silver Medal for Outstanding Achievement in jazz and composition/composer, alongside Qué Pasa, a Latin jazz tribute to Claudio Roditi that was honored as a Global Music Award Bronze Medal Finalist.

He continued this award-winning streak with Swing Your Thing (2021), recognized as a Global Music Award Bronze Medal Finalist in the Big Band category (July 2022), and Rhythm and Dues (2021), named a Bronze Medal Finalist for the jazz track ‘Broad & Porter’ (July 2021).

Triumph Over Adversity

In 2023, Marino faced a serious injury that threatened his playing. Through perseverance and the Taubman Method, he returned with renewed strength, releasing Friday Night in April 2024 as a testament to resilience.
