Biography

Raised in South Philadelphia, Tony Marino began piano lessons at age seven after hearing Leon Russell. His early studies with pianist Bill DelGovenatore introduced him to jazz masters like Thelonious Monk, shaping a lifelong dedication to jazz piano.

As a teenager, Marino immersed himself in the Philadelphia jazz scene, working at a local music store and connecting with musicians Frank DiBussolo and Al Stauffer. Further mentorship from pianist Tom Lawton and jazz educator Ernest “Hoppy” Hopkins cemented his musical direction.

Early Career

In 1975, Marino joined the Italian-American band Idea ’71, recording Supersano at Virtue Recording Studios and releasing a single on Medley Records. After relocating to Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1995, he formed Tony Marino and Havana Heat, leading to his debut release:

  • The Latin Jazz Project (1997) – the album that launched his solo recording career.
